The federal government ‘doesn’t know what it’s making an attempt to attain’ with Euston Station, MPs have warned, as work to attach HS2 is paused.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is asking for the Division for Transport (DfT) to ‘lastly set up’ its expectations for the station, as plans for HS2 at Euston have been within the making for eight years.

HS2 Ltd, a government-owned firm, first proposed an 11-platform design for Euston in 2015, in-built two phases.

Following a assessment in 2020 these plans have been modified to a 10-platform, single-stage design to attempt to make it easier and cheaper.

In March it was introduced work at Euston could be paused for 2 years, as the price of the works had elevated from its preliminary price range of £2.6 billion to £4.8 billion.

Throughout this time, the DfT says it can reassess the undertaking, deciding the minimal necessities for the undertaking and what needs to be prioritised.

‘The federal government should exhibit it’s not simply repeating the identical errors of unrealistic costings.

‘HS2 Euston has proven us forging forward over-optimistically in an unclear path is clearly not the correct strategy.’

HS2 Ltd instructed the committee it set the ‘wildly unrealistic’ price range within the expectation it might be revised, as a result of uncertainty round prices.

‘The Nationwide Audit Workplace just lately acknowledged this can present time to place the station design on a extra secure footing and we proceed to work at tempo to make sure the transformational advantages of HS2 are delivered to passengers by higher connecting our largest cities, supporting 1000’s of jobs and serving to develop the economic system.
